I found your writing this morning through a book titled, ‘short’ by Alan Ziegler; an odd little piece called, ‘Hymn’. I can’t wait to dig into more of your writing if this is a taste of what’s to come! Thank you for being…fearlessly unique!

I’ve found your writing through Libby and am devouring it all. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake moved me to tears many times: I presume you’ve been told this before, but it so beautifully encapsulates the autistic experience (which resonances with me, as the mum of two autistic kids). I love how the protagonist learns to thrive with her skill/difference, how to feel comfortable with it, after trying to change and avoid it for so long. I’m currently reading The Butterfly Lampshade and just luxuriating in your prose, and the heartache of intergenerational trauma. So much of everything you write resonates! And I’m enjoying how you write about places I know, having lived in both Burbank and Los Feliz. I am a writer too (mostly aspiring, as I’m homeschooling my children right now), and I hope to study with you at some point! I came to your website to see if you did any classes outside of formal programs at USC. I’ll research further and hope to get there! Your writing has inspired me so much, particularly to lean into weirdness and not worry so much about how that might come across. For now, I’m busy reading your work whenever I can, and other writers in similar genres. Thank you for your gorgeous work! :)... Collapse

I first read "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake when I was twelve years old; far too young to understand it. I first read "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake when I was twelve years old; far too young to understand it. I am writing this now as a nearly-eighteen year old whose parents have "split" as a result of an affair. Food has been one of the biggest changes in my life. There is less of it, now. Recipes don't taste the same. Tuna casserole is now too dry, spaghetti noodles are now either under or overcooked, and the Shakshuka is now made with less whole-feeling tomatoes. I didn't understand this book six years ago, but I have an intimate understanding of Rose and Joseph now. I hope, someday, to make my own lemon cake, and feel the sadness in it.... Collapse

Hello! I am Ayesha from Dhaka.I hope you get this. I'm sorry if this is the inappropriate place to write selfishly, but I'm not sure if you want to know the emotional impact you have on others. In a used book store, I discovered "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake." I enjoy reading novels about magic in daily life. I needed this book to heal something within of me that it did. Without writing a book myself, I don't think I could ever express how I feel about my brother's failed suicide attempts in its entirety. I've never read anything that so perfectly captures how I feel. that I feel the want to go, that I love him, that I comprehend, that I want him to stay, and that I want him to stay.... Collapse
