I'm impelled to express my love for the story Frank Jones. Not only did I enjoy reading it, but I've never felt so seen in a character, in their actions, their humour and dialogue Thank you!

Just finished "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake" and wanted to express how amazing this book was. So bittersweet and lovely. You've made something amazing. Thank you.

It's been over twenty years, but I suddenly thought of you today. You and your mother taught a writing and dancing workshop at the UCLA Extension. It was so much fun. Just wanted to say hello. Love from Germany, Kay

I read the story The Rememberer in a short story collection and thought it was excellent. I think I view it as a metaphor for a slow and painful breakup of divorce. Many people have vivid memories of watching their partner turn into something they hardly recognize.

It was the quote specifically about the skirt catching on fire in The Girl In The Flammable Skirt and I was mesmerized. I bought the book immediately, devouring it and loving every moment. Some parts went over my head, but hey, my mom had just died and thatâs not necessarily a PG event either. It further introduced me to magical realism during a time I needed it most. I donât know how many times Iâve read my copy but youâve been my favorite author ever since. Thank you for existing and for sharing your work!... Collapse

The particular sadness of lemon cake: I love this book. The passages describing how Rose experiences the emotions of others... how overwhelming that can feel, confusing at times, the not knowing what to do with the knowledge. I have never before seen anybody describe this experience so well. It is a very magical story, in a very good way! đ

I found your writing this morning through a book titled, âshortâ by Alan Ziegler; an odd little piece called, âHymnâ. I canât wait to dig into more of your writing if this is a taste of whatâs to come! Thank you for beingâŠfearlessly unique!

Iâve found your writing through Libby and am devouring it all. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake moved me to tears many times: I presume youâve been told this before, but it so beautifully encapsulates the autistic experience (which resonances with me, as the mum of two autistic kids). I love how the protagonist learns to thrive with her skill/difference, how to feel comfortable with it, after trying to change and avoid it for so long.
Iâm currently reading The Butterfly Lampshade and just luxuriating in your prose, and the heartache of intergenerational trauma. So much of everything you write resonates! And Iâm enjoying how you write about places I know, having lived in both Burbank and Los Feliz.
I am a writer too (mostly aspiring, as Iâm homeschooling my children right now), and I hope to study with you at some point! I came to your website to see if you did any classes outside of formal programs at USC. Iâll research further and hope to get there! Your writing has inspired me so much, particularly to lean into weirdness and not worry so much about how that might come across. For now, Iâm busy reading your work whenever I can, and other writers in similar genres.
Thank you for your gorgeous work! :)... Collapse
